Is using my real name important when connecting to stores?

Yes. Your first and last name should match the one you have given to the store when creating your loyalty card or webshop account. Otherwise, we can expect some back and forth so the store can verify your identity.

You may have associated different emails ✉️ to different store accounts and that's ok. The store needs to verify your identity so you just need to the request from the email you created the store account with.

If you didn't give your real name when signing up with a store, it's more tricky, we suggest you create a new account with your real name for that store.

Why can't I use itsme to authenticate my demand to request my data with stores?

We will soon integrate the ability to request your data via Datajoy.eu using itsme.

Why not just use the Nutri-Score when I'm buying stuff in the store?

The Nutri-score is only considering health while the environment, ethical impact, fat loss, and price can also be of great interest to citizens.

Overall, we believe the Nutri-Score is good for the impact on your health but it's only displayed on a voluntary basis by the manufacturers. As a result, most unhealthy products do not display the score on the front of the packaging.

We also believe the Nutri-score can be built upon and improved by correcting the following shortfalls:
- not favoring local and seasonal products which tend to be healthier because they tend to contain more nutrients [Source + example]
- not penalizing strongly transformed products that are known to be unhealthy [Source + example]
- not favoring (traditional) products that are helpful for your healthy gut microbes [Source + example]
- not taking into account the way some products are systematically prepared. Ex: A bag of frozen fries will receive "A" while a bottle of virgin organic olive oil might receive a D. [Source + example]
- not taking into account several solid scientific discoveries [Specify sources and examples]
- using a category approach that can result in unfounded results: Ex: A Coke Zero will get a better score than a can of salty fish. [Source]
- not adapted to previous purchases. Ex: A household eating much saltier than most should see salty products even more penalized. [Source]

Why would a store share the data?

As an EU (or UK) resident, you have rights regarding your data with (UK) GDPR under several conditions.
Stores have to respect these laws. Datajoy.eu and Scorely.eu focuses on making this process as smooth as possible for EU residents requesting their data without creating too much burden for stores.

What happens once the data is on scorely?

Once you get your data, you just choose what organization/university/NGO/methodology will give the scores. It can be a different one for health, environment, fairness and fat loss.

And on Scorely, it's easy for scoring organization to give you easy and accurate scores and feedback.

It's also super easy to share your food-related purchases with your sports coach, nutritionist or doctor

Who is this for and how reliable is it?

This service is intended for EU (and UK) residents.
Keep in mind this is an early and free research preview and Scorely may produce inaccurate information.

Obviously, information obtained via Scorely should not be considered personalized medical advice and should not replace your medical provider. We do however believe it's mostly providing super useful information and that's why we are prioritizing access to friends, family, medical providers, researchers, and early adopters who understand that there will be many bugs.

How are the score attributed?

Any individual at a University (or other higher education organization), NGO or relevant Public institution can share rules and attribute ratings all products. The rules must be transparent and under the open-source (GNU GPLv3 license). Users will be able to see for each purchase the rules and underlying data used to calculate a score. Currently, only Python scripts and Microsoft Excel formulas are considered, but a point-and-click interface is on its way.

Researchers working on public good initiatives (diabetes, cancer, deforestation, scorely scores...) can ask a free "data room" access to all our product data as well as data of users who have specifically opted in to share their data for this type of research.

What would be the impact on my privacy?

With Scorely, you can with a single click request all connected stores to erase the past and future data of all items we have identified as potentially sensitive.

Where will my purchase history data be stored?

Short term, the purchase history will be stored in Germany 🇩🇪 in 🇪🇺 GDPR compliant as well as ISO 27001 compliant storage. We also plan to store the UK resident's data in the UK.
When requested by a user, we'll do our best to make it available in a decentralized and privacy-friendly way where users define who and what application can access it.

What is your relationship with stores?

There is no financial relationship or agreement between Scorely or datajoy with any store. We are just enabling EU residents to exercise their GDPR rights. Scorely however is open and happy to collaborate to make the process smoother for the stores.

Why?

1) They're lazy. Just like us!😅 The project was started because there wasn't a low-effort way to buy better products!

2) They spend most of their life turned upside down (Source).
So? Most of us evaluate whether a product is good before making the purchase and taking into account what matters to us is super hard. We believe this should be turned around in most cases: the evaluation should be done automatically after the purchase (especially for small recurring purchases). Then prioritize what change matters the most.
